🌿 A Memoir of Interspecies Communication, Nomadic Living, and Mystical Journeys
What if the world around you wasn’t just alive—but listening?
Once, When I Was Tree is a collection of true stories from my life—wild, mystical, sometimes a little unbelievable, but all very real. These are the adventures that changed me: the nights I danced with Jaguar, the days I listened to trees, the moments when insects, plants, and the unseen world revealed their deep intelligence.I’ve lived much of my life on the move—as a nomad, a scientist, and a seeker—and along the way, I’ve come to understand that everything is alive, and everything is speaking. These stories are my way of passing that on.
They’re told with honesty, a bit of wild humor, and the kind of poetic reverence that only comes from living close to the earth.
Wherever you are—under a red desert sky, barefoot in a northern forest, or curled up on your couch—I hope this book feels like a warm fire to sit beside. May it invite you to question what’s real… and remember how to listen.
🌿 For readers of Crazy Free (my first book), Braiding Sweetgrass, Desert Solitaire, How to Change Your Mind, and The Spell of the Sensuous—those drawn to the magic of plant medicine, nature mysticism, and deep ecological wisdom.
What if the life you built wasn’t the life you were meant to live?
Would you leave everything behind to follow your heart?
Once upon a normal time, I was a suburban wife, a geophysicist, a straight-A student climbing volcanoes and chasing data. From the outside, my life looked great. But inside, something was cracking open. One heartbreak, one breath, and suddenly my soul separated from my body. One strange and mystical and my life would never be the same—head first into the Rabbit Hole.

Crazy Free is my raw, unfiltered story of that leap into the unknown. It’s about facing fears, shadows, and old addictions. It’s about surrendering control, again and again, to something deeper, wilder, and more alive than I ever imagined. Along the way, I met magicians and misfits, teachers of chaos and keepers of ancient wisdom—and I slowly remembered who I really was.
At every step, I was offered a choice:
Retreat to the familiar…
Or trust the mystery and keep going.
If you've ever felt the ache for something more—something real—I wrote this for you.
Perfect for fans of Wild by Cheryl Strayed, Eat Pray Love, and The Untethered Soul.
Praise for Crazy Free
"Many of us dream of giving up comfort and security for absolute freedom but lack the courage or confidence to really give it a go. If your mind ever goes there, this book will strike you to the core." — Evan J. Larsell, world traveler and big-wall climber
"Melissa Wyld is an original, expressive, and provocative writer, honest, vulnerable, wide open, intellectually curious, with a huge spiritual hunger and a courage to seek it out of life." — C.M. Evans, author of The Oak Park Taoist Primer.
Hi, I’m Melissa Wyld.
I’m so glad you’re here.
I’m a modern-day nomad, adventurer, and storyteller with an insatiable curiosity for the natural world. I’ve wandered through deserts and rainforests, slept under stars, studied geology, and listened deeply to the whispers of the unseen. Somewhere along the way, science and spirit began to dance, and my stories became bridges—between the physical and the magical, the wild world outside and the one within.
My books are true tales, told with dirt under my nails and wonder in my eyes. Welcome. Come sit by the fire with me... I have stories to tell.

These stories belong to the oral tradition, shared around a fire. I wrote them aloud and always meant for them to be listened to, with eyes closed, like a dream.
I want to record a professional audiobook. Once, When I Was Tree, these stories, deserve it. That means studio time, clean editing, and doing it right—not rushed or DIY.
If you feel called to help me make that happen, I’d be so grateful. Every bit helps.
Together, we can let these stories travel further—like seeds on the wind—reaching ears and hearts I could never touch alone.
